The American Family Cemetery
Several years ago, I interviewed distant relatives to hear their stories and see their photo albums. Family portraits of people both young and old, all long gone generations ago. Across the southern landscape of the United States dot the burial grounds of families that have existed since colonial and antebellum times. These constructed environments are ever-changing. Their context through human and natural interactions has led to their modern social taboo. These cemeteries are essentially their own family portrait, not of just one generation, but all of them.
